New to the TI-84? Here's a quick overview of the most essential operations:
Basic Arithmetic
Use the number keys and operation buttons (+, โ, ร, รท) to perform calculations. Press ENTER to execute. The result appears on the right side of the display.
Graphing Functions
Press Y= to enter function editor. Type your equation (e.g., xยฒ+2x-3). Press GRAPH to plot. Use WINDOW to adjust the viewing range.
Scientific Functions
Access SIN, COS, TAN, LOG, LN directly from the keypad. Press 2ND first for inverse functions (sinโปยน, cosโปยน, tanโปยน).
Storing Variables
Calculate a value, then press STOโ followed by a letter key (A-Z) to save it. Recall stored values by pressing ALPHA + the letter key.
Degree vs Radian Mode
Press MODE to toggle between DEG and RAD. This affects all trigonometric calculations. Use DEG for most school work and RAD for calculus.
Common TI-84 Functions
Graphing
Plot multiple y=f(x) functions, adjust window settings, trace curves, find intersections, and analyze graph behavior.
Algebra
Solve equations, factor polynomials, work with fractions, exponents, radicals, and complex expressions with ease.
Statistics
Calculate mean, median, standard deviation. Perform regressions (linear, quadratic, exponential) and create statistical plots.
Calculus
Evaluate numeric derivatives and integrals, find function minimums/maximums, and explore limits graphically.
Trigonometry
Compute sin, cos, tan and their inverses in both degree and radian modes. Graph trig functions and analyze periods.
Matrices
Define, add, multiply, and invert matrices. Solve systems of linear equations using row reduction and determinants.
TI-84 Games & Downloads
Did you know you can play games on your TI-84 calculator? Popular games include Tetris, Snake, Mario, Pac-Man, and Flappy Bird โ all designed to run on the TI-84's processor.
Games are installed by transferring .8xp program files from your computer to the calculator via USB cable. While games are a fun way to explore your calculator, they're only available on the physical device โ not on online emulators.
Reset, Battery & Troubleshooting
If your TI-84 is frozen, displaying errors, or behaving unexpectedly, a reset usually fixes the issue. There are three types of resets:
- RAM Reset โ Clears temporary memory but keeps archived programs. The safest option.
- Archive Reset โ Clears archived data including saved programs.
- Factory Reset โ Returns calculator to out-of-box state. All data is lost.
For battery issues: The TI-84 Plus uses 4ร AAA batteries (plus a CR1616 backup). The TI-84 Plus CE uses a built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery charged via USB.
